The McDonnell Phantom is considered to be one of the most successful jet fighters of the 1960s and 1970s. Over 5000 planes were built, many of them under licence. Originally designed as a carrier-borne interceptor for the US Navy, the early trials were so promising that the US Air Force adopted it as a tactical fighter and this was quickly followed by numerous other air forces around the world, including Israel, Japan, West Germany and Egypt, which explains why some examples are still in service today.
